He was a Guilford County native, Korean War Army veteran, retired from Carolina Container and member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife, Carol H. Efird of the home; daughters, Candice Weiss of Pinehurst, Nancy Griffin of Kernersville, Monika Efird-Beeker of Carolina Beach and Beth Poage of Trinity; son, Bradley Cox of Asheboro; sisters, Mary Schade of St. James City, Fla., Sarah Henry of Marion, Ohio, and Bessie Gibson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; brother, Bob Efird of Asheboro; 13 grandchildren.
