Mattie was born in Kansas. Samuel was born in Iowas, his parents in Indiana. They were renting at 956 Homer Avenue.

2. Census in 1920 in Kansas City, Wyandotte, KS. 5 Samuel C. Hays, proprietor grocery store, 46, was living with wife Martha A., 39; Samuel, 9; and mother-in-law Martha De Vine, 83, widowed, who immigrated in 1858 and was naturalized in 1865, a native of Ireland and Irish parents. Samuel was born in Iowa, his parents in Indiana, and his wife Martha born in Kansas of Irish parents. Their son was born in Kansas. They were living at 220 S. 11th St.


Samuel married Martha Ann Devine, daughter of Thomas Devine Sr. and Martha Dobbins. (Martha Ann Devine was born in Feb 1880 in Emmett Twp., Pottawatomie, KS,1 3 6 died in May 1968 in , Wyandotte, KS 1 3 and was buried on 11 May 1968 in Kansas City: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wyandotte, KS 3.). The cause of her death was hemmorhage.3
