Edward M. Heaton, 73, retired Baltimore and Ohio railroad dispatcher, committed suicide by hanging Thursday afternoon at his home, 1124 Buffalo st.
His body was found on the stairway of his home, between the first and second floors, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Mr. Heaton's wife when she returned from an hour's visit in the city's business district. One end of a belt was about Mr. Heaton's neck and the other end was fastened to the newel post of the stairway. His death was caused by strangulation.
Dr. P. E. Cunningham of Frankin, deputy Venango county coroner was summoned, and after making an investigation stated he would issue a certificate of death by suicide.
Mr. Heaton had been in ill several months. He suffered from heart disease and his vision was failing. He ivas despondent over ill health and relatives said he feared he would become blind.
Mr. and Mrs. Heaion had dinner together yeaterday noon and Mrs. Heaton and Miss Shaffer, who resides at the Heaton residence, left tha house and spent an hour in the business district. Although Mr. Heaton had often been despondent recently lie gave no indication of his intentions yesterday.
Mr. Heaton was the son of and Marion and Julia Heaton and was born in Charleston, O. He had been a resident of Franklin five years, removing to this city from Pleasantville, Venango county.
He was a member of the Mason order at Akron, O., and Cleveland. Ohio. Mr. Helton had been employed by the B. O. railroad 43 years.
Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Anna M. Bury Heaton. two brothers, Pearl Heaton and Wilbur Heaton of Greenfield, O., and two sisters, Mrs. Bert Ames and Mrs. Robert Officer, both of Los Angeles, Calif.
Ths body of the deceased was removed to the Boyd N. Park funerai home, where funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Benjamin Bunn Rover, retired Presbyterian minister, will officiate at ervices. Interment will be in the Pleasantville cemetery.
