11. Newspaper: Pottstown Mercury: Wilson Tyson Shoots Runaway Steer, 19 Jul 1950, Pottstown, Montgomery, PA. 16 Bullet Ends Jaunt of Runaway Steer

A buttlet in the head at 6:40 o'clock last night ended the career of a young steer that escaped the slaughterhouse of Samuel S. Root, 233 York street, South Pottstown, Monday afternoon.
The bullet was fired from a .303 rifle by Wilson D. Tyson, 58 West Main street, South Pottstown. Simultaneously, Arthur B. Rapine Jr., 1215 Maple street, let go at the brown steer with a 30.06 rifle, but Tyson's shot did the trick.
The two-year-old steer escaped Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock when a latch on an automatic gate failed to catch. The steer came out of a waiting pen into the catching pen, bumped against the gate and found itself free.
It led a dozen South Pottstown youths a complicated chase all afternoon until it disappeared into wooded land near the river Monday night.
At 1 o'clock yesterday morning, it was spotted in Penn alley by E. Larry Hoffman, 24 East Main street, South Pottstown, and his son Richard, who were driving home from work.
"He was standing there licking an ice-cream container," young Hoffman said yesterday. "I came within six feet of hitting him with the car."
The father and son went into their nearby house for a gun but that was the last they saw of the wily animal.
The hunt continued on and off yesterday until early in the evening, when Dolphus Butler, a groom at the Edward L. Gruber estate, spotted the restless animal in a meadow.
Butler put up the meadow bars to confine the steer and called for Root.
Root, whose searching party included his 76-year-old butcher William Mauger, and his son William, came up quickly with the two riflemen, to the meadow, between the Schuylkill river and canal.
The two shots were fired from a distance of 150 yards, putting an end to the young steer's adventures.
The men had to drag the animal 100 feet by hand before it could be loaded on a truck and taken back to the slaughterhouse for its delayed skinning.
Earlier, Root had brought a heifer to the woods, hoping that it would attract the steerby its calling, but the plan failed to work.
Root's steer weighed 950 pounds and was valued at $300.
