Junior biology major, Travis Bicher '12 of Richland, Pa., experienced the satisfaction of biological discovery this summer while working with David Mu, Ph.D., an associate professor in the departments of pathology and biochemistry, and molecular biology at the Penn State University College of Medicine. Bicher was assigned to a research project aimed at uncovering new uses for old drugs.

From June to August, Bicher and another intern screened the lung cancer drug Gefitinib with 1,120 off-patent drugs in an attempt to find a combination that could overcome a resistance to Getfitinib that many patients encounter. While he did find a potential lead in an anti-cholesterol drug, Bicher says his accomplishments at his internship were much greater than medical discovery.

"Perhaps the most important skill I gained was communicating my findings to others. I created a poster on my work and presented it at a conference to doctors, other interns, and laypeople. I also learned to work with tumor samples, participated in a lecture series, and took a rodent handling course, which I think helped me overcome my squeamishness with lab animals," he said.

Participating in an internship so early in his college career helped Bicher clarify his goals for his future. "Prior to my internship last summer, my goals were rather vague, mostly because I was still in my first year at college. My ambitions were modest, consisting of getting a bachelor's degree and becoming a lab technician. Working side-by-side with grad students in my lab and doing much of the same work as them made me realize that going for a higher degree would not be as hard as I had imagined," he said.

Bicher's newfound confidence does not only apply to his consideration of attending graduate school. He also says that his experience in Mu's lab will help him when it comes time to look for a job.

"It is difficult to think that any potential employer or educational institute would be anything but attracted to an applicant with this sort of experience in hand. Grades and classes are, of course, a part of the consideration in hiring and admittance, but it is much better to show one's ability to use the skills and knowledge obtained practically and to demonstrate a strong interest and work ethic," he said. "Having done this internship and planning to do more in the future, I do not doubt my ability to get employment or continue my education after graduating from LVC."
