Fierce Jr. of Park Ridge Funeral services for Russell E. Fierce Jr., 76, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Nelson Funeral Home, 820 Talcott Road (at Cumberland), Park Ridge. Born March 22, 1926, in Normal, Ill., the son of Russell E. Sr. and Lucille (nee Sawyer) Fierce, he died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in Park Ridge. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. A 1945 graduate of Peoria Woodruff High School and a veteran of the Army Chemical Corps (1953 to 1955), Mr. Fierce went on to earn his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Bradley University in 1949 and his MBA from Northwestern University in 1959. During his career he had worked for U.S. Gypsum, Motorola and GM Labs in Chicago, and from 1967 until his retirement in 1993 he was the department manager of facilities engineering for Uarco Business Forms (now Standard Register) in Barrington. An adult volunteer with the Northwest Suburban Council of the Boy Scouts of America since 1971, Mr. Fierce was a 1990 recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the council's highest adult award for long and meritorious service to youth. He had served as a committee member for Pack #252 in Park Ridge and in numerous capacities with Troops #1 and #2 in Park Ridge. He was vice chairman of the Illiniwek District, was instrumental in reestablishing Troop #17 in Waukegan, a retarded Scouting program, founded Post #17, and was an advisor to Post #217. His other Scouting awards included the Woodbadge, the Scouter's Key, the Arrowhead Honor, three Organizers Awards and the District Award of Merit. In addition, Mr. Fierce had a fine record of working with retarded youth and adults as a former president of Misericordia Home for Retarded Babies and the Lincoln State School Parent Association, as former treasurer of the Voice of the Retarded and as president of the Kiley Development Center Parents Association in Waukegan. He was also an advisor to the YMCA Indian Guides in Park Ridge and was state Grand Master of the Order of the DeMolay. Mr. Fierce was active at Park Ridge Community Church, where he had served as president of the Men's Club, as a Sunday school teacher and as Sunday school superintendent. He was also a founding member of the Delta Rho chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity at Bradley University. Russell was the beloved husband for 52 years of Lorraine Fierce (nee Beecher); dear father of Russell B. (Alice), Christopher S. and Gayle L. Fierce; and fond brother of Byron (Beulah) and Edward (Barbara) Fierce. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Boy Scouts of America, North Suburban Council, 600 N. Wheeling Road, Mount Prospect, IL 60056; or to Avenues to Independence, 777 Busse Highway, Park Ridge, IL 60068, would be appreciated.
