Newspaper: Daily Times: Two Fliers Killed In Crash During Raleigh Air Show, 2 Jun 1947, Burlington, Alamance, NC. 5 Raleigh, June 2 -- (AP) -- An air show staged to dedicate Raleight's new Civil Air Patrol airfield was marked yesterday by tragedy when two young men were killed in the crash of a stunting plane.
The two were Hubert L. Bottitt, 24, Army Air Forces veteran and flight instructor at the field, and Walter B. Bruce, 32. Both were Raleigh residents.
A crowd estimated at 5,000 watched as the plane, piloted by Bobbitt, manuevered with two other planes in a demonstration of "precision spins." Then the spectators gasped as the plane failed to come out of a spin and crashed behind a clump of trees on the edge of the airfield.
The announcer at the show had just told the crowd that the planes would demonstrate the safety of modern flying by showing how simple it is to pull out of a spin.
