Noted events in his life were:
1. Military on 15 Jun 1861 in , Cabarrus, NC: Civil War: Private, Company F., 1st NC Cavalary. 6
2. Newspaper: The People's Press: Alfred Owen Dies From Horse Accident, 17 Feb 1881, Winston-Salem, Forsyth, NC. 7 "State Items. From the Salisbury Carolina Watchman. KILLED. We regret to learn by a postal card received by his sister, Mrs. C. F. Baker, of this place, that Mr. Alfred Owen, of Davidson county, was thrown from a horse near his residence Tuesday, and killed."
[Genealogists Note: Charles F. Baker is reported to have wed 6 June 1849 Anna Owen, sister of Alfred b.1817, per "The Heritage of Davidson County 1982" book, confirming Alfred died in 1881, not 1887 as reported in the 1982 book. Given time for a mailed postcard to reach Salisbury, and for the Winston-Salem paper to reprint the Salisbury paper's item, the Tuesday death was likely 8 Feb 1881.].

Book: The Heritage of Davidson County 1982: The Alfred Own Family, 1982. 1 The Alfred Owen Family By Barbara Jenkins Thompson -------- Sources: North Carolina Troops - Cavalry, 1861-1865; Davidson and Rowan Co. courthouse records, gravestones, newspaper clippings, interviews and family members --------
Alfred Owen, born 18 February 1817 in the Jersey Community of Rowan County, son of Peter (29 December 1787 - August 1865) and Margaret Smith Owen (18 September 1789 - 9 October 1848) who married 22 August 1809 in Rowan County. Before Margaret died, they probably had 7 other children, since Peter named 3 sons and 5 daughters in his will written 20 May 1862.
Alfred was 31 when his mother died. The other children had already left home so Alfred and his father continued to farm and were the only family members listed in their household in the 1850 census. At that time their land was valued at $3,200. Peter Owen remarried 2 September 1851 in Davidson County. His new wife, Mrs. Susan (Susannah) Smith, was the widow of Alfred Smith.
Alfred enlisted for service in Cabarrus County 15 June 1861 at the age of 43, becoming a private in Company F., 9th Regiment N. C. S. T. (First Regiment N. C. Cavalry). His brother Anderson (born circa 1822 - died 5 February 1905) was also a private in the same company, enlisting in Wake County 25 February 1864. Both were present or accounted for through December 1864.
When his father died in August, 1865, Alfred and his brothers, Anderson and David S. Owen, each received over 200 acres of land. One sister, Elizabeth, the wife of Henderson Adams, received 150 acres but it was to pass to her son, Romulous S. Dobson, after her and her husband's death. Receiving money instead of land, the other sisters were 1) Susan, married 28 November 1831 Isaac M. Wiseman and had a son Addison N. Wiseman. She later married 15 November 1848 Mace C. Pendleton and had a son, John S. Pendleton. 2) Sarah L., wife of Daniel Trantham; 3) Anna, married 6 June 1849 Charles F. Baker and 4) Mary, wife of Romulous S. Roberts. All the children and Susannah were willed slaves, but with the end of the Civil War and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, all the slaves were freed.
At the age of 58, Alfred married 27 August 1876 in Davidson County, Amanda Rowe, born 25 July 1854, daughter of Henry and Susan Beeker Rowe. There were 4 other children in her family: Mary Ann (19 March 1847 - 31 Jul 1930) and Ellen (circa 1854 - 5 November 1918) lived with their only brother, Jason (10 July 1865 - 31 October 1927), who was married 30 August 1884 M. Alice Hartley (19 April 1865 - 28 June 1936), daughter of Maggie Hartley. All 4 are buried at Jersey.
Alfred and Amanda lived in the Jersey Community, probably on the land Alfred had received from his father. Their 4 sons, William (died at 14), John David, George Washington, and Peter Alfred, were under age 11 when Alfred died in 1887. He is buried at the Owen Cemetery behind the Junior Order Home.
Amanda married 2) 6 December 1892 Samuel C. Styers, born 9 December 1847, a widower with 4 children: Sarah (Mrs. Richard H. Beck), John Stokes (27 September 1881 - 23 October 1956), Will, and Pres. Amanda and Sam lived at the Owen homeplace, but Amanda's 3 boys were sent elsewhere. John lived with his aunts and uncles, Mary and Rome Roberts and Jason and Alice Row. George lived with the Harm Burkhart family, and Peter was reared by Dr. Beal at the Belmont Farms. Amanda and Sam had 3 daughters: twins, Mary and Maude, and Addie.
Amanda died 29 May 1935 at 80 after a long illness with heart trouble. Sam died 14 June 1935 16 days later. They are buried at Center Hill Baptist Church. The homeplace then passed to Amanda's son, Peter. The other boys, John and George, received about 60 acres each on opposite sides of it. The Pittsburg Plate Glass plant now stands on that site.
Alfred and Amanda's oldest son, William is buried at the Owen Cemetery. John born 26 Nov 1877 died 26 May 1959; George, born 5 April 1979, died 19 October 1947, married 22 May 1900 Martha Ann Barber, born 10 October 1877, died 30 March 1946, daughter of Joe H. Barber. He and Martha are buried at Center Hill. They had 5 children: Pearl (Mrs. George Carter), Vance, Joe, Lena (Mrs. Albert Klutz), and Pauline (Mrs. Bill Lohr).
The youngest son, Peter, born 28 October 1880, died 2 May 1959, moved to Mount Airy, and married Beulah Rockett. He is buried at Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy. They had 4 children: Mrs. Mozelle Manson, who was living in Indianapolis, Ind., at the time of his death, Kathryn (Mrs. Chester Mays), Frances, and Paul, all of Mount Airy.

Maude, who lived at Hilltop Rest Home before she died is buried at Smith Grove Baptist Church on Sowers Road.
