Two of the 50 witnesses expected to testify against Robert Luongo Jr. swore yesterday in Nassau County Court that they had been swindled out of thousands of dollars in investments through a complex get-rich-quick scheme Luongo is accused of masterminding. Kenneth Rocco, a teacher at the State University of New York at Farmingdale, said that he invested $13,000 in Luongo's alleged Ponzi scheme, a term used to describe a confidence game in which fresh money from new investors is used to pay earlier investors high rates of interest on their principal. Rocco testified that among the activities Luongo had led him to believe his money was invested in was a diamond mine in Spain. He also said that he never received a prospectus Luongo had promised him to explain his investment of $3,000. The second witness, Theodore Zagaro, testified that Luongo had said that investors were told that their money went into real estate, performance bonds, condominiums and to finance a race car.
