1. Newspaper: Public Opinion, 22 Jan 2004, Chambersburg, Franklin, PA. 2 Family tries to recover from fire PHOTO CAPTION: Fire damage: Laura Lane, left, and her daughter, Selinda, inspect some of the damage to their home following Tuesday's fire. In a matter of five minutes, Rodney Lane Sr. and his family lost nearly everything they owned. The Lanes braved bitter winter weather Wednesday so they could search for personal items in the charred remains of their Greene Township home, destroyed when fire ripped through the two-story structure Tuesday afternoon. Five local fire companies were called to the family's home at 4935 N. Byers Road around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, after Selinda Lane, Rodney Lane Sr.'s daughter, found smoke pouring from the first floor. The family of five adults and four children had been living in the home for about a year. Now, they have nowhere to go. "It couldn't have been more than five minutes and the whole house was going," said Laura Lane, Rodney Lane Sr.'s wife. "I couldn't believe it. Flames were shooting out the side of the house by the time we got back." The Lanes believe the fire started in a first floor bathroom, possibly through a faulty electrical outlet that has "been trouble lately." "I went into the bathroom and left the light on and the next thing I know the house was on fire," Selinda Lane said. "It had to have started there." Although the family had multiple space heaters in the house, they said that none were on at the time of the fire. A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is still investigating to determine the cause of the fire. The Lane home was divided into two dwellings. One part housed Rodney Lane Sr., his wife Laura, daughter Selinda and three children \emdash Selinda's two children and a cousin. The other portion was occupied by Rodney Lane Jr., his wife, who is four months pregnant, and their son. According to Selinda Lane, she was preparing to watch the children while her parents went out on Tuesday. Just before they left, she entered her brother's "apartment" and nothing was wrong. -- Fire \emdash Page 6 continued from Page 1A -- Her parents left and then it happened. Minutes later, before Rodney and Laura Lane could even reach the end of their street, the home was in flames. Although everyone escaped the fire uninjured, including two pets, all but a few of the family's possessions were destroyed. "We lost everything," Rodney Lane Sr. said. "I mean, we can't find anything that isn't covered in smoke, or burnt from the fire. The only thing we've got left are the vehicles." Piles of the family's new furniture, burnt beds and tattered clothes littered their yard. "That furniture isn't even paid for," Laura Lane said. "Everything is gone." Among the lost items were Laura Lane's birth certificate, Social Security card and car titles. Worse, she lost gifts given to her by her mother, who passed away in June 2002. "Everything she left me was in there," she said. "I can't replace that stuff." Adding to the loss, nothing the family owned was insured. "I couldn't tell you how much all that's worth," Rodney Lane Sr. said. "I know $40,000 wouldn't come close to covering all that." Early reports from the Pennsylvania State Police, Chambersburg, listed the total losses at $100,000. The Chambersburg Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the family immediately following the fire and helped them find housing in a local motel. However, the Lanes' time there is limited. They were provided with two-day vouchers for their rooms and must find somewhere else to stay this afternoon. "We've got to find something to live in," Rodney Lane Sr. said. "Right now, we've got nowhere to go." Despite the misfortune the family has seen since yesterday's blaze, there may be hope in sight. The Lanes rented the home from Chambersburg resident Dr. Patrick Brannac, who has insurance on the structure and its property. In an effort to help the family, Brannac has asked Greene Township officials to allow him to place one or two mobile homes on the property so the Lanes have somewhere to live while they weigh their options. "I'm trying to get them a place to stay. I'd like to put one or two double-wides up for them so they have a place to live," Brannac said. "They're good people and I'd like to help."
