SALISBURY, Dec. 20 -- Like the hobby-turned-profession of many another fond parent, Mrs. Frances Beeker's doll shop in Rowan county found its origin in the persuasiveness of a child.
Last year little Miss Beeker wanted a doll for Christmas. Furthermore she craved it badly enough to show her mother a doll pattern in a volume from the Rowan county bookmobile, a division of the Carnegie traveling library. Never a person to damper Christmas spirit, Mrs. Beeker gave in. At her home in the Mill Bridge community she gathered together a pile of cotton, cut out the pattern and created a Christmas doll.
The experiment turned out so successfully that the doll maker decided to use it in disposing of her Christmas gift problem. Fifteen nieces in four states received magnificent rag dolls for Christmas. Before many days had passed friends began to place orders, and suddenly Mrs. Beeker was in the business.
She makes two kinds of dolls, one about 12 inches and the other several feet high. The larger dolls "walk" with proper assistance. Every doll has hair of yarn, embroidered facial features, three fashionable outfits, and oil-cloth shoes. Several are adept at standing on their heads.
Mrs. Beeker takes care to develop a distinctive individual in each creation. Thus her friends often see themselves depicted in facial embroidery. Usually her model turns out the be Joan crawford. Once in the creation of a bridal couple, Mrs. Beeker gave the bride a "pouting" expression and no amount of redesigning would erase it. Friends say it all depends on the artist's mood as to what sort of disposition her rag children inherit.
