He was born on May 23, 1925 in Minnesota to Norwegian immigrant parents. He was raised in Omak, WA in a two-room farmhouse on 10 rocky acres with his five siblings. High school valedictorian, "Jim", graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Jim served as a deck officer on Liberty ships at the end of WW II. Following the war, he served in the Navy until he could afford to attend WSU, where he earned an Electrical Engineering degree and developed a passion for international folk dancing. Jim's EE career included building and maintaining power supply facilities at ALCOA (Vancouver and Texas), Douglas United Nuclear (Hanford), Western Electric (Vancouver) and Portland General Electric where he retired.

Jim married Janneke "Yonnie" Burhans in 1957 and together they enjoyed folk dancing, introducing many in the Portland area to Scandinavian dance through the Nordlys (exhibition) and Norske Runddansere dance groups. Jim also enjoyed camping, sailing and skiing. He and Yonnie promoted his Norwegian heritage at the Sons of Norway Columbia Lodge, where he was president for many years. They were also 40+ year members of Columbia Presbyterian Church.

Jim is survived by his wife, Yonnie; sons, Gary (Kim) and Eric (Tami); daughters, Carol (Dennis) Blix and Julia Tonder; grandchildren, Jasmine, Ryan, Ethan, Jaelynn, Andrew and Evan; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul and Bernard; and sisters, Hardis, Charlotte and Irene.

A private memorial is pending.
