I. was 23 and Pearl 15 years old. Everyone and their parents were born in North Carolina.

2. Census in 1940 in Asheboro, Randolph, NC. 4 The 1940 census recorded at 103 Highway 220: Purl Smith [indexed wrong due to poor handwriting], 35, widowed, occupation mending in hosiery mill, living with daughters Kathleen, 18; and Marie, 11. They were born in North Carolina. In 1935 they were living in Stanley County N.C.

She attended Pfeiffer College, where she studied writing, which became her passion in life. She was a member of Garber United Methodist Church and the Ladies Professional Golf Association. She was instrumental in founding the Ladies Golf Association at New Bern Golf and Country Club.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond DeBerry Hatley; two sons, Phil and Johnny Hatley; one daughter, Louise Jones; and a grandson, Justin Hatley.

She is survived by her son, Tom Hatley, and wife, Judy, of Greensboro; one daughter, Pamela Hatley, of New Bern; two sisters, Merrie Lou Shelley, and husband, Gordon, of Baltimore, Md., and Goldwyn Russell of Albemarle; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Garber United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kent Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220 Raleigh, NC 27605, or to Garber UMC, 4201 Country Club Road, New Bern, NC 28562.

Arrangements are by Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
