He was a graduate of Ohio University with a Master's from Bentley College in Waltham, MA. He was Assistant Controller with Jordan Marsh Company of Boston. Jim's hobbies included intricate wood carvings of birds and the construction of ship models. He loved the outdoors as a birdwatcher and hiker. Jim is survived by his wife, Margaret; his son, Jeffrey Mariner, DVM of Nairobi, Kenya; his sister, Margaret Livingston of Youngstown, OH; his stepdaughters , Diane C. Malven-Pang of Tahoe City, CA and Dorothy M. Heig of Houston, TX, and his grandchildren, Alba Mariner and Jeffrey Mariner of Ft. Collins, Co. He was preceded in death by his son, James S. Mariner III. The family suggests donations be made to Washoe County Library, Sparks Branch, Box 2151, Reno 89505, or St. Paul's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund. A memorial service will be conducted at St. Paul's Church in Sparks, February 4, 2009 at 4 p.m.


James married Mary Lou Craver, daughter of Dr. Nevin Samuel Craver and Blanche Leone McFee, on 24 May 1952 in Youngstown, Mahoning, OH.1 (Mary Lou Craver was born on 30 Dec 1927 in Youngstown, Mahoning, OH.)
