Living with them is Ann's niece, Bertha Beher, 8. Also in the home is Jane Slifer, servant, 15, and Otto Pfaendler, boarder, 22. John J. was born in Indiana and his parents in Bavaria, Germany. Ann was born in Indiana, her father in Virginia and mother in Massachusetts. Bertha and her parents were born in Indiana.

He is a very pleasant and agreeable gentleman.

On yesterday morning at 6 o'clock Mr. John Jacob Hauck passed peacefully away at his home in this city. On Saturday night last Mr. Hauck fell and broke one of his legs, and the bone was broken in such a manner that is protruded the skin, making a very dangerous wound. He was thought to be doing well and resting easy, until an early hour Tuesday morning he was found to be in a dying condition by his faithful wife, who immediately sent for medical aid, but on their arrival it was found the he was beyond medical skill and soon died from heart failure, as he was the subject of heart disease. He was born in Lawrenceville, Ind., Aug 25, 1839, and was the son of the late Mayor John Hauck, of that city. He came to this city almost twenty-five years ago and entered into the retail grocery business, which he continued until a few years ago, when he retired from active business life. He enjoyed the distinction of doing a large and profitable business, and was on e of the best business men in the State. He was courteous and kind, and very liberal with his wealth and did his part to help the poor whenever asked to do so. He was very popular with all classes and his death will be greatly regretted by a large per cent of our citizens. He has accumulated a large estate. He leaves a wife, mother and several brothers and sisters to mourn his sudden and unexptected death. His remains will be laid to rest on to-morrow at 2 o'clock. The funeral service will be held at the residence by Rev. Lewellen, of the M. E. Church.
