2. Obituary: Bangor Daily News on 20 Sep 1994 in Bangor, Penobscot, ME. ² NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Elena Carangelo Smith, 76, died at Waldo County Hospice in Belfast, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in New A Haven, Conn., the daughter of Dominic and Mary A. Ferrante Carangelo. Elena was a 1935 graduate of New Haven High School, and a 1939 graduate of New Haven State Teacher's College. She was married to Justin H. Smith during World War II, living in Oklahoma and Florida until the family settled in Bethany, Conn. Elena worked as an elementary school teacher and curriculum developer in New Haven, Conn. for 25 years.
Upon retirement from teaching, she pursued her interest in antiques by operating an antique shop and developing a collection of ephemera. In 1986, Elena moved to Belfast, where she became energetically involved in community organizations. She served for four years on the Board of Directors of HOME in Orland. She was a member of the Belfast Garden Club and the Belfast Arts Council. She was also an active worker for Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County and was instrumental in the development of children's bereavement support group.
Influenced by Eleanor Roosevelt and May Sarton, Elena was politically and socially progressive, always a strong advocate for social equity and the well being of children. She touched many people's lives with her uncompromising spirit and undaunted vitality.
She is survived by two sons, Justin H. Smith Jr. of North Pittston and David Lyndon Smith of Belfast; a sister, Gloria Perschino of Ridgefield, Conn., a brother, John J. Carangelo of La Joya, New Mexico and four grandchildren, Laurel Kidder Carangelo, Ashley Maya Smith, Rebecca Ann Smith and Andrew Evan Smith. A memorial service will be held at Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church in Belfast, 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 1994. The memorial service will be followed by a gathering of friends and family at Elena's home at 26 Ocean Street in Belfast.
