Job loss surprises Consolidated workers

Guadalupe Torres went to work at Consolidated Industries Corp. on Friday as usual. At a meeting about a month ago, he said Sunday, he and his colleagues were told by company officials that the furnace manufacturer didn't expect any seasonal layoffs this year. But on Friday, with no notice, Torres, a full-time employee since August, was laid off.
More than 70 people in the roughly 180-person production work force were given notice, said Michael Igo, chief steward for the Sheetmetal Workers International Association, Local 503.
Attempts to reach company officials Sunday evening failed.
Igo, who has been with Consolidated almost 10 years, said most of the people laid off had worked there less than a year. "So many of them face it so short a time before the holidays," Igo said. "It's one of hardest things I have to deal with as a union representative."
The layoffs were even a surprise for union officials.
"We were going great guns," Igo said. "Two departments, plus part of a third, had been working three shifts."
Consolidated, at Concord Road and Brady Lane, usually has seasonal layoffs but this one was deeper than usual, Igo said. "I was expecting from the strength of our market that we'd receive the layoff after the holidays as opposed to before."
