2. Newspaper: The York Daily: Mrs. Leppo Finds Evidence of Crime, 12 Jul 1899, York, York, PA. 7 THE PARR MURDER CASE.
A Sheet Found Buried on the Lot at the Parr Home.
A discovery was made on Sunday afternoon, that may be of importance when Jacob I. Parr is put on trial charged with the murder of his wife, on Monday morning, June 5th. When Mrs. Mary Alwood and Mrs. Reuben Flickinger prepared Mrs. Parr's body for burial, they asked her husband for a sheet, and he said that he did not own any. Later the district attorney asked for the sheet on which Mrs. Parr died, and was informed by Parr that it had been taken to the home of Parr's parents with the rest of the clothes. The neighbors doubted this, for shortly after the death of Mrs. Parr, Mrs. Sarah Leppo, an aged lady who lives near by, saw a sheet at the foot end of the bed at Parr's. They also knew that the clothes taken to tne home of Parr's parents were washed and there was no sheet on the wash line. After the funeral, Parr buried the skirt and some underwear which his wife wore when she died; he did this in the presence of several neighbors, who say that only these articles were deposited in the hole. One of the neighbors told Parr he should cover the clothes better, but Parr said that would do for the present. Last Sunday afternoon, a number of neighbors were discussing the affair, and Mrs. Mary L. Overman, who resides with Mrs. Leppo, and who was not at home when Mrs. Parr died, suggested they hunt for the sheet. In the presence of Mrs. Leppo, Frank Sponseller and wife, Ellsworth Bart and wife and Mrs. Reuben Flickinger, Mrs. Overman began to dig where the clothes had been buried by Parr. After removing the other clothes, they found the sheet about two feet deep in the ground. The sheet was somewhat moulded and bore marks whicn looked like a bloody cloth when it is washed. It is thought that Parr had the sheet hid until Wednesday night, and then removed the other clothes and placed the sheet at the bottom of the hole. Officer Smeach was notified and after examining the sheet, told Mrs. Overman to preserve it, as it might be of service at the trial.
