Bud was born to Lloyd and Lillian (Volk) Beecher in Racine, Wisconsin, where he lived until his family moved to Norwalk, CA in 1948. Bud grew up in Southern California, where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Nellie Weeda. He earned a bachelor's degree in History and a master's degree in Social Sciences from what was then Fullerton State College. He earned his PhD in Diplomatic History at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, where daughter Lynne was born. Soon after relocating to San Luis Obispo, CA in 1969 to begin his career as a Cal Poly history professor, son Matt was born. After 32 years at Cal Poly, where he received the Cal Poly Distinguished Teaching Award, Bud began pursuing a second career in Marriage and Family Counseling. He earned a master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and promptly opened his own practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist. For 15 more years, Bud worked and thrived in this capacity until his retirement in 2013. Bud and Nellie were actively involved in supporting their children and grandchildren in their various sports, dance, and musical performances. Bud was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo, especially in the area of Adult Education. In 2016, Bud, along with Rev. Luanne Griguoli, established Opening Doors of Interfaith Understanding, a bimonthly open gathering of Muslims, Jews and Christians for the purpose of dialogue and fellowship. Bud's very active life included running, cycling, swimming, as well as camping, fishing, travel near and far, and a dedication to the arts. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and mentor. His wisdom, encouragement, sense of humor, and listening ear will be deeply missed. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Bud in these recent months, particularly the dedicated nurses, health professionals, and caregivers from Dignity Hospice. Bud is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nellie; daughter, Lynne Baker (Jim); and son, Matthew Beecher (Tara). He was a beloved Opa to his grandchildren: Tyler and Hailey Baker, and Kory and Garrett Beecher. He also leaves behind siblings: Mike Beecher (Debbie), Ralph Beecher, and Lauretta Beecher Van Netten (Randy); as well as many nieces and nephews.
