Article: The waves of development that have altered the face of the First State are changing its voice as well. While it's too soon to write an obituary for the Sussex County drawl, the drawn-out "o" of Kent County or the nasal intonations of northern New Castle County, linguistics experts say Delaware's accents are under assault. As a downstate native might say, " 'At's sumpthin, innit?" Delaware actually has two accents, according to University of Delaware linguistics professor Lou Arena. "The distinct borderline between Northern and Southern English in the United States on the East Coast is the St. Georges Bridge," Arena said. "It has been colloquialized that southern Delawareans speak a different form of English, and they do.They speak Southern English. The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal forms what linguists call an "isogloss" -- a boundary, frequently a natural feature such as a mountain or river, that separates accents.
