Baseball barbers are as thick as summer flies and boxing barbers run a close second, but If you look around for a barber versed In the humanities your hair may reach your shoulders before you locate a tonsorial craftsman who speaks your language. Corryville Barber Harry Thiele, however, can produce a steady, knowledgeable flow of conversation on any couth subject from grand opera to the graphic arts. Of course, there should be a bit of the reconteur in a man of Mr. Thiele's background. He started barbering in his father's shop at the turn of the century in the same building (2929 Glendora Ave.) where he now lives. HARRY THIELE was nine years old when his dad, Henry, built a platform around the barber's chair so his son could reach the top of customers' heads. The father learned the trade in Magdeburg, Germany. He immigrated to Cincinnati and began barbering on Court Street. His shop stopped several slugs fired in the famous Courthouse Riot in 1884. The 100-year-old brass hand clippers and several dozen antique shaving mugs and blown glass, hob-nail bottles, are still in the Thiele household. After learning the barbering trade, Harry studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, etched glass in a Mt. Adams cut-glass firm, lithographed posters for some of the world's most famous circuses at a downtown firm and returned once again to barbering. Along the way Mr. Theile studied voice and in the 1920s sang at the Cincinnati Summer Opera, in which he is a charter member. HERE ANOTHER colorful chapter in Thiele's life opened before him. He met his wife, a ballerina, also a charter member, backstage at the opera pavillon. If the barber ever runs out of interesting conversation he surely can call to his wife for assistance. She studied at Shuster-Martln, where she became an intimate friend of Tyrone Power and his mother, and took part in many dramatic and musical presentations in the Cincinnati area. AFTER HER MARRIAGE, Mrs. Thiele worked for some time as a dresser at the opera and acquired a treasured photograph album containing pictures and friendly notes from many famous musicians. An autographed picture from Jan Kupera, opera star who appeared here 15 years ago, reads, "To Nellie Theile, whose quick safety pin saved my high C." Early medical practice adds to Harry Theile's conversational repertory. He has watched his father apply many a leech to a black eye and extract teeth before the blessing of cocaine both common barber shop operations in 19th Century Cincinnati.
