1. Newspaper: Franklin Telegraph and Democratic Advertiser: John V. McCune attended Temperance Convention, 23 Sep 1839, Chambersburg, Franklin, PA. ² Franklin County Temperance Convention.
In pursuance of notice given, a Convention composed of Delegates from the different Temperance associations of Franklin and the adjoining Counties, was held in Mercersburg, on Thursday the 12th of Sept., 1839. The following gentlemen were present.
Antrim Total Abstinence Society. -- John Waddell, Thomas Crossin, John V. McCune, Wm. R. Rankin, Jas. McDowell.

Census in 1850 in Greencastle, Franklin, PA. ³ The 1850 census recorded John McCune, carpenter, 41, living with wife Esther, 30; Harriet, 16; Sarah C., 13; William H., 11; Susan A., 8; Rebecca C., 5; Eriana, 3; and "Infant", 4 months old when the census was recorded 23 Aug 1850. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania.

3. Census in 1860 in Taylor Township, Dubuque, IA. ⁴ The 1860 census recorded J. V. Mc Coon, farmer, 51, living with wife Esther, 40; daughter Harriet, 26; William, 21; Angeline, 17; Caroline R., 15; daughters Erie A., 13 and Francis, 10; Robert K., 8; son Payson, 5; and David, 2. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania except David in Iowa. The post office was Epworth.

John married Susana Elizabeth Beecher, daughter of William Beecher and Elisabeth M. Herr, in 1832 in , Franklin, PA. (Susana Elizabeth Beecher was born on 2 Jan 1814 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD ^{5 6 7}, christened on 27 Feb 1814 in Hagerstown: Zion Reformed Church, Washington, MD,^{5 6} died on 8 May 1839 in Greencastle, Franklin, PA ⁷ and was buried in Greencastle: German Reformed Cemetery, Franklin, PA ⁷.)
