Her outstanding scholastic record teamed with leadership abilities were the qualities which led Des Plaines American Legion Auxiliary Unit 36 to choose Mary Van Noy as its representative to the 33rd session of Illini Girls State. Under auxiliary sponsorship, the girl "citizens" are taught the practical application of Americanism through government and good citizenship. Illini Girls State was held June 12-19 at MacMurray College in Jacksonville. This year 526 girls attended the educational conference. They were trained in the business of conducting an election, developing a party platform and learning the functions of the governing body. Mary is the daughter of Mrs. Blanche Van Noy, 1505 Oakwood Ave., Des Plaines, and the granddaughter of Mrs. Elmer Uhlhorn, president of the Des Plaines Auxiliary. She attained high honor roll standing as a junior at Maine West High School, where she majors in social science and art. She has won an art award for three years, an archery team award for three years, a photography award and a service award. As a junior, she was a member of Orchesis, the Ushers and Usherettes Society and the Mat Maids. As a sophomore, she was president of her class. At Illini Girls State in June, Mary held office as a precinct committeeman and state central committeeman for a party. Highlight of her week was a trip to Springfield where she toured the Capitol and visited the Governor's office, Lincoln's home, Lincoln's Tomb, the Old State Capitol and the carillon bells. Mary will attend the August meeting of Des Plaines auxiliary and report on her experiences there.

Mary married John Sickel.
