Dr. Bucher was taken sick last Tuesday evening and admitted to the hospital Wednesday morning. From the first his condition, by reason of his advanced age of 85 years, was considered to be extremely Grave. For a period of sixty years, Dr. Bucher continued in the active practice of medicine and was one of the best-known practioners in the Lebanon valley. Born a son of Dr. Christian Bucher and his wife, Mary Valentine, who was a direct descendant of the Steigel family, of which Baron Steigel was the head In this country, Isaac Reily Bucher also descended from a family of physicians, the first of whom came to America from Switzerland In 1760. He was Dr. Benedict Bucher, great grandfather of the deceased. His son, Dr. Benedict Bucher, moved into Lebanon county from Lancaster county in 1780 and was the father of Dr. Christian Bucher, who followed him in the practice of medicine in the southeastern tier of the county. Dr. and Mrs. Christian Bucher were the parents of a family of six children, of whom Dr. Isaac R. Bucher was the last surviving member. After receiving his education in the public schools of Schaefferstown, Dr. Bucher attended the Strasburg academy in Lancaster county during the winter of 1850-51, and a year later went west, locating in Minnesota, which was then a territory. Later he joined his brother, Dr. Samuel Bucher, at Cedarville, Ill. For a time he was employed as a clerk in a Buena Vista, Ill. Store, but deciding upon taking up the medical profession, he entered the office of his brother at Cedarville. In 1854 he returned to Schaefferstown and there continued his medical studies under his father, spending the winters of 1855 and 1856 in attendance upon lectures at the Pennsylvania medical college, which was later merged with the University of Pennsylvania. Graduating from that Institution in 1857, he returned to Schaefferstown and took charge of his father's practice. Remaining there until 1876, he removed to Lebanon and continued in the active practice of medicine up to the time of his fatal seizure. In addition to having two brothers who were physicians, Dr. Bucher also has two sons, who followed him in the profession. One of the leading spirits in the organization of the Lehigh Valley medical society, Dr. Bucher for a time served as it's president. He was also a member of the American Medical Association and the Lebanon County Medical Society. On Oct. 2, 1860, Dr. Bucher was married to Miss Mary E. Hiester, of Lebanon, and eight children were born to them, of whom four survive him, Mrs. Bucher's death having occurred some years ago. The children are Dr. John C. Bucher, who resides in the Bucher homestead at Tenth and Chestnut streets, Dr. Hiester Bucher, who is a prominent Reading physician, Paul Bucher, an electrical engineer at Dallas, Texas, and Miss May Bucher, in charge of the Visiting Nurse association at Lancaster.
