A 62-year-old Birmingham woman, who was fired last week from her job with the State Department of Youth Services, filed suit in circuit court Wednesday, charging her dismissal was "due solely to her age." Elizabeth M. Beeker, who was fired from her position as a personnel assistant at the Chalkville Training School for Girls on Nov. 2, contends that the dismissal violated the U.S. Age Discrimination Act of 1967. She is asking the court for a temprorary restraining order to block the firing and for permanent reinstatement. Mrs. Beeker's position at the school for delinquent and problem girls was eliminated last October. After she was told her job would no longer exist, she tried unsuccessfully to find a similar position in another agency, the suit states. The suit contends her failure to find another job was also a result of age discrimination. In addition, the suit charges the state lied when they told her her job bad been eliminated because another office was going to incorporate her duties. Mrs. Beeker contends the work was never transferred to another office and that the remaining staff members at the Chalkville School have had to increase their work load to make up for her absence. According to the suit, Mrs. Beeker's 63-year-old husband has suffered two heart attacks and is unable to work. In addition, she is the primary source of support for her 84-year-old mother.
