2. Newspaper: Fort Worth Telegram: Susan and Dale Ballard pleaded Tuesday morning with a Hurst 16-year-old, who was involved in the killing of their son, 16 Apr 2008, Fort Worth, Tarrant, TX. 4 Slain man's parents urge teen to turn life around
The 16-year-old is sentenced to 22 months' probation for his role in the Feb. 15 killing.
FORT WORTH \emdash Susan and Dale Ballard pleaded Tuesday morning with a Hurst 16-year-old, who was involved in the killing of their son, to change his life. State District Judge Jean Boyd, at the Scott D. Moore Juvenile Justice Center, had just sentenced the teen to 22 months' probation for his part in the Feb. 15 slaying of 20-year-old Reed Ballard. The Ballards and their daughter, Christen Shamblin, 31, of Bedford, begged the teen to take advantage of his second chance. "This is not easy for me," said Dale Ballard, who needed several seconds to compose himself before continuing his victim impact statement. "It's going to be tough for you." He pointed out that he had been given a second chance as a senior in high school. "You grow up and be a good person," Dale Ballard said. The teen wiped tears away with a tissue while his mother, grandmother and sister quietly wept. Last week, the Ballards and Shamblin pleaded with another 16-year-old,who was sentenced to 15 months for his involvement in the slaying. Charges are pending against five other teens in the killing of Reed Ballard. On Tuesday, the 16-year- old admitted to his role in the slaying as part of a plea agreement. He testified that he went to the junior high to take part in a fight. Last week, the other 16-year-old testified that he was also recruited for the fight. As part of the plea agreement, both teens must testify against the other five teens. Prosecutors are seeking to have a 15-year-old,accused of being the shooter, tried as an adult. That hearing is next week in Fort Worth. The 15- and 16-year-olds are not being identified because they are juveniles. Scott Thomas Defee, Cary John Adair, James Dallas Hudgins and Miguel Alcorta, all 17 and of Hurst, face capital murder charges. They remain in the Tarrant County Jail with bail set at $500,000 each. On Feb. 15, police say, Reed Ballard rode with an 18-year-old friend to sell marijuana to Hudgins at Hurst Junior High School. But that was a ruse to allow the teens to assault and rob Ballard's friend in retaliation for an alleged burglary at Alcorta's apartment and the theft of drugs and other belongings, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
