A fire-fight during a combat operation of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airborne) in the Khe Sanh-Hue sector of Vietnam, resulted in the death April 28 of Sp. 4 David Thomas Barnes, 21, of 2524 W. Emaus Ave., Allentown. Barnes was a squad leader with Company Second Batitalion, Seventh Cavalry Regiment, and received a gunshot wound as he led his men against the Viet Cong. He died of the wound.
He was a son of Harold S. and Helen H. (Hale) Barnes. His father said information as to exactly what happened was meager in the official notification of the soldier's death. Further details will be sought.
Squad Leader Barnes was founder of the Pickwick Club, a literary society at Colby College, Waterville, Maine, which he attended before enlisting. He was also a member of the college debating society. He enlisted in the Army Sept. 10. 1966, and was assigned to Vietnam Feb. 25. He was a 1964 graduate of Allen High School, where he was a member of the junior varsity wrestling team. He also attended South Mountain Junior High. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Allentown.
Surviving are his parents and two sisters, Mary Patricia and Nancy Margaret, his twin, both at home. Funeral arrangements are being made by the J. S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 1601 Hamilton Allentown.
