Obituary: The Virginian-Pilot: obituary of John J. M. "Jack" Beecher on 23 Aug 1999 in Norfolk, Norfolk, VA. 1 John J.M. "Jack" Beecher died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999. A native of Philadelphia, he attended the University of Pennsylvania on an academic scholarship, graduating in 1939. He was drafted in August 1941, married Mary Alice Tyler of Norfolk in 1942, and was commissioned in July of that year. He then assumed command of the 1973rd Aviation Truck Company. The company operated in England as part of the 8th Air Force. He returned to the United States in the latter part of 1943 and assumed command of the 2122nd Aviation Truck Company (Chinese), taking it to India and then by way of the Ledo-Burma Road into China, where it operated as part of the 14th Air Force until the end of the war. He retired in 1972 as chief of the organization and management branch of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and moved his family to Norfolk. He was a member of the Retired Officer's Association, Sewells Point Man's Golf Association, Virginia Opera Guild, Chrysler Museum of Art, Hermitage Foundation Auxiliary, the Mowbray Arch Society, and the Norfolk Society of Arts. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Tyler Beecher of Norfolk, and a son, Marc Beecher of Phoenix. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Opera and/or to the Chrysler Museum of Art. John married Mary Alice Tyler, daughter of William Perry Tyler and Maude Joyner, in 1942.1 (Mary Alice Tyler was born in Oct 1919 in , Bertie, NC 1 8 9.) |
