Last Of Old School Of Saddlers In Lebanon
John M. Kaley, who for many years held the reputation of being Lebanon's only surviving saddler of the old school of harness makers and leather workers, passed away at 10 o'clock Tuesday evening, at his home at 530 North Eighth Street. He was ill nine weeks, the last seven of which he spent In bed. He. had been in failing health, however for some months previously, suffering from a complication of ailments which arose from a pen-eral debility incident to advancing age. The decedent was born and reared at Jonestown, and was the last member of the family of John and Susanna (Capp) Kaley. He came to Lebanon as a boy of seventeen years, and spent his entire life here in leather work. In his early days he enjoyed a high reputation as a saddle and harness maker, and spent upwards of forty years at the little shop at Ninth and Water Streets. He continued his work there despite the fact that the automobile displaced most of his handicraft of the olden days, but he was busy in other leather work until two years ago when he gave up at the age of 83 years. He passed his 85th birthday anniversary in July of this year. He was widely known to the older generation of the community, and also had an extensive acquaintanceship among younger citizens also. He was a regular attendant at services in Salem Lutheran Church, having a membership there which extended many years back. He resided for many years just a few doors north of the church on Eighth Street. He was a member of Washington Camp 254, Patriotic Order Sons of America, since its organization, and only by a narrow margin and force of peculiar circumstances, missed being included in the charter membership. Devoted to his home he had few organized relationships but was nevertheless widely known and highly esteemed because of his exemplary citizenship. Mr. Kaley leaves his wife. Laura (Embich) Kaley, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Embich: a daughter, Miss Catherine Kaley, at home, and a married son, Harry K. Kaley, of Haddonfield, N. J. The only other relative is a niece, Miss Sarah Kaley, of this city.

John married Laura Bicher Embich, daughter of Henry William Embich and Catherine Elizabeth Beicher, on 10 Jan 1895 in Lebanon, Lebanon, PA. (Laura Bicher Embich was born on 27 Aug 1862 in Lebanon, Lebanon, PA 11 12, christened on 5 Jan 1863 in Lebanon: Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lebanon, PA,11 died on 11 May 1942 in Lebanon, Lebanon, PA 12 13 and was buried on 14 May 1942 in Lebanon: Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, PA 12 13.)
