1. Obituary: Lancaster Online: obituary of Joan Rudy Holzbauer on 28 Apr 2009 in Lancaster, Lancaster, PA. 1 Joan Rudy Holzbauer, 87, of Millersville, died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 26, 2009. A resident of Meadow Ridge Assisted Living Community at Willow Valley for the past five months, Joan was stricken while on an outing to her home in Millersville.

Born February 3, 1922, in Lancaster, she was the only child of the late William L. Rudy and Elizabeth Flick Rudy. Her late husband, Col. Joseph F. Holzbauer, USMC died in 1969. Joan graduated from McCaskey High School in 1940 and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She later earned a BA in School Nursing in the 1960's and an M.Ed in School Psychology from Millersville State University in the 1970's. She was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church and a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

During her early years, she was a registered nurse on staff at St. Joseph and Lancaster Osteopathic Hospitals. She married Joe Holzbauer in 1944 upon his graduation from the United States Naval Academy. Traveling extensively with her husband who was a career officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, she returned to Lancaster with her children when suddenly widowed at the age of 47. In her 50's, while raising her three youngest children, she began a new career as a School Psychologist with IU 13 until her retirement in the 1990's.

Joan was very active and a member of a variety of organizations including the National Association of School Psychologists, The Military Officer's Association, St. Joseph's Nursing School Alumni, The Iris Club, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, St. Phillip's Guys and Dolls, and The Village Book Club. Always on the go, she arranged a variety of traveling opportunities in her retirement. She enjoyed playing Bridge with a group of friends and getting together with her friends from high school, nursing school, book club and the IU. She spoke fondly of all of her friends who were very important to her. She also enjoyed her grandchildren who were a source of pride to her.

Joan will be deeply missed by her family. Surviving are her four children, Col. Joseph R. Holzbauer, USMC, husband of Maureen, Oceanside, CA, Beth H. Midgett, wife of Lloyd, Lititz, Blaise R. Holzbauer, husband of Sheryl, Lancaster, and Remy R. Holzbauer, Lancaster. In addition, her 8 grandchildren, J.G. Holzbauer, Heather Lomelin, Lauren Holzbauer, Alex Beecher, Lindsay Midgett, Elise Holzbauer, Tom Holzbauer, and Camille Holzbauer, and one great granddaughter, Lily Holz-bauer, also survive her. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amy S. Beecher.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Joseph Catholic Church, 440 St. Joseph St., Lancaster, PA 17603, on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 10 AM with Father Joseph C. Hilbert as the Celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman. Relatives and Friends are respectfully invited to view at the church on Saturday between 9 and 10 AM. Memorial Remembrances may be made in Joan's memory to the American Lung Association or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements Entrusted to the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Millersville, PA 17551, 717-872-2266.
