1. Obituary: Lancaster Examiner: drowning of Edwin Babb on 3 Jun 1857 in Lancaster, Lancaster, PA. 4 DISTRESSING ACCIDENT TWO MEN DROWNED. Two young men, named Edwin Babb, and the other Reynolds were drowned in Newlins dam, on Buck Run, near Parkesburg, on Saturday afternoon last. They had gone out with a seine to fish, and while drawing the seine, one of them got into deep water, and from some cause or other, (probably from being entangled in the net,) commenced struggling, and the other swam to his relief. The young man who so nobly braved the danger and went to the rescue, fell a sacrifice. He was seized by the drowning man and both went down together ! Which went out to the relief of the other, we do not know. At the place where the accident occurred, the water was 10 or 15 feet deep. Babb was a good swimmer. Reynolds was a young man from Harrisburg, and Babb was a son of the late Samson Babb, formerly of the Washington Hotel in West Chester, and at one time Sheriff of Chester county. He had made arrangements to leave Parkesburg in a day or two, and he had joined some of his companions in a farewell fishing party. He was a machinist and had been working in the State Shops at Parkesburg.

THE DROWNING OF BABB AND REYNOLDS.
-----
It appears that Edwin Babb lost his life in going to the rescue of his companion, John C. Reynolds; Franklin Kimes was in company. They were fishing in Buck Run near Parksburg, Chester county, with a seine. A correspondent informs the Record that Reynolds was holding the sweep line, Edwin Babb held the middle of the said line, and Kimes held the brail to keep the lead line down. When they got some thirty feet from shore, Reynolds called out in a distressing way for Babb to come to him; by this time Reynolds had gone down; Babb in a little while went down too. The men on the shore cried out for Kimes to go to them -- which he did; when he got there, both were under the water; one seized Kimes with desperation by the leg, and the other by the side. Reynolds and Babb were drowned, and Kimes was within a hair's breath of the same fate. The men on shore, by this time, had rails floating in the water, and Kimes getting hold of one, got safely to shore. He had gone down twice, and was nearly exhausted. Reynolds was a young man, 22 years of age. Babb was a married man about the same age; he leaves a wife and child. Only a week ago he was received into communion with the Presbyterian Church. Reynolds is a son of John Reynolds, Esq., at Harrisburg, and Babb is a son of the late Samson Babb, of West Chester.
