2nd suspect is charged in Allentown arson case
-----
An 18-year-old Allentown man has been charged as a second suspect in the Sept. 15 burglary and arson fire of a city apartment, investigators said yesterday.
Eric Leighton Beecher of 1308 Chew St., second floor, was arrested at his home and charged with the arson of a second-floor apartment at Bridgeview Apartments, 701 Harrison St.
Terry Butcher, 25, of 548 Ridge Ave., Allentown, was charged last week in the incident. Police believe the two are acquaintances.
Police did not link Beecher with a string of at least 14 arson fires dating to Sept. 2, saying they believe he was involved in just one. But police said Butcher still may be considered in the other fires.
Beecher was arrested at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. Police announced the arrest yesterday, saying said they "had no difficulties" apprehending Beecher, who was "very cooperative."
Allentown Detective David Howells Jr. said Butcher and Beecher went to the second-floor apartment of Kim Derr, whom Beecher apparently knew, on Sept. 15 to burglarize it. Outside the apartment building, police later found Derr's $3,000 stereo system and some of her jewelry hidden in bushes.
The fire in Derr's apartment was started by piling clothing on the stove and igniting it to cover up the burglary. Derr's apartment had smoke, heat and fire damage.
Butcher -- who pleaded guilty to 11 charges of arson in 1982 -- also was charged with setting a 2 a.m. fire at 747 S. Delaware St., about a block away from Bridgeview. The Delaware Street fire was started the same way as that in Derr's apartment.
Beecher also was charged with causing or risking a catastrophe, criminal mischief, burglary, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, recklessly endangering and criminal conspiracy. He was arraigned before District Justice Charles Crawford and committed to Lehigh County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.
Butcher faces on two charges each of arson, causing or risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering, criminal mischief, burglary, theft and receiving stolen property. He remains in the Lehigh County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Drug arrests watched by new mayor
-----
Drug dealers who didn't give up their illegal habits for the new year received a little help Thursday from local police and Lancasters new mayor. Members of the county's Drug Task Force and city's Drug Suppression Unit arrested several people this week in connection with suspected deals of heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana.
More than $11,000 worth of marijuana was confiscated from a Salisbury Township home on Tuesday, when members of the county's Drug Task Force served a search warrant around 8:30 a.m. Lisa Ann Newnam, 34, and Erick L. Beecher, 27, both of 746 Mt. Vernon Road, Gap, were each charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana and criminal conspiracy after police found the 7 1/2 pounds of marijuana and 34 grams of hashish in the residence. Two small children were in the home when police arrived, detectives said, along with two drug customers one of whom happened to be carrying a handgun. The children were turned over to relatives. A Task Force spokesman described Newnam and Beecher as mid-level dealers whose activities had been under investigation for three months. Both were committed to prison in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.
