Costello Quits Engineer's Job

Lawrence Costello, who had charge of the design and construction of the Broad Street, Ridge Avenue and Locust Street Subways as well as the building of several subway extensions, will retire on April 1, it was announced yesterday.
Costello, chief of the engineerlng branch of the Department of Public Property, will be employed after his retirement as a consultant on city subway and engineering problems, according to Commissioner of Public Property Mortin E. Rotman. A contract calls for six months' work at $600 per month.
ELIGIBLE FOR PENSION
A city employe for 39 years, Costello will be eligible for a $3400 pension beginning July 1. His current salary is $11,723 annually. He lives at 340 E. Gowen ave.
As chief engineer and director of the old Department of City Transit, Costello was in charge ofi building the three major subway systems as well as the extension of the Market Streeet subway to 46th st. and the subway-surface car extension of the Market Street subway to 40th st. and Woodland: ave. These projects involved a total expenditure of about $200,000,000.
REGISTERED ENGINEER
Costello is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania; a charter member and past president of the Philadelphia Section of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, and an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Society of Planning Officials.
Beginning work for the city in 1915 at the age of 20, Costello was made acting transit director in 1946 and director in 1947. In 1952, under the new charter, the transit department was incorporated with the Public Property Department and he was named chief of the Bureau of Engineering and Architecture. He is now 59.
