Census in 1870 in Holmesville, Appling, GA. 2 The 1870 census recorded Margaret Beecher, domestic servant, 25, living with her children Martha, 8; Mary A., 6; Hariet L., 4; Sarah, 3; and Catharine, 1. They are in a household headed by a black farm laborer, Dolphus Flanders, 22 years old, and white farm laborer Green Melton, 22, and his supposed mother, Martha Melton, 59. Also in this home is Henry C. Deen, 10, white, and a black farm laborer, George Mincey, 19. Everyone was born in Georgia. The post office was Holmesville. Martha married Henry Artimus Carter in 1877 in Georgia.1 (Henry Artimus Carter was born on 19 Apr 1850 in Pembroke, Robeson, NC,4 died on 29 Oct 1914 in Baxley, Appling, GA 4 and was buried in Surrency: Overstreet Cemetery, Appling, GA 4.) |
