Newspaper: Public Opinion: Blaze leaves family homeless but unhurt, 10 Nov 2009, Chambersburg, Franklin, PA. 4 (photo of firefighter and burned home) LETTERKENNY TOWNSHIP A fire Monday afternoon in Letterkenny Township gutted a house and left a family homeless. Fire crews were dispatched around 3:40 p.m. to the two-story home of April Eckenrode at 8159 Upper Strasburg Road for a dwelling fire. According to Tom Rine, spokesman for the Pleasant Hall Fire Department, firefighters arrived on the scene and found heavy smoke and fire showing from the back corner of the mostly wooden home. Crews started with an aggressive attack on the fire from the inside, but were called out of the house when smoke and heat became too intense. Firefighters then focused on knocking the fire down from the outside of the home, while drawing water from a pond next door. After the fire was knocked down, which took about 30 minutes, crews again started entering the structure. Rine said the house is a total loss and that Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Jeffrey Sarver would be on the scene today to investigate the cause. Eckenrode said that she and her boyfriend Chris Beecher and her 14-year-old son Tyson were working in the front yard while their other son, Tyler, was in the house asleep. Beecher sent Tyson into the house to grab something when he saw that the door around the house's computer room was on fire. The family then woke up Tyler and were going to try to put out the fire on their own, but the flames and smoke were already too intense. "We thought it was something small, but it was already engulfed," Eckenrode said. "When we opened the door, there was just smoke." No one was injured in the fire, although the family's two cats were unaccounted for. The family's two dogs live outside the home and were not harmed. Eckenrode said while watching firefighters overhaul the structure that she wasn't sure where the family would be staying. The Franklin County Chapter of American Red Cross had been called to offer assistance. Pleasant Hall was assisted by crews from West End, Marion, Newburg-Hopewell, Letterkenny, Cumberland Valley Hose Company, Franklin, Vigilant Hose, Fannett-Metal, Friendship Hose and ambulances from Pleasant Hall and Shippensburg. "I can't believe how fast that house went. We had no time to get anything out," Eckenrode said.
