Obituary: Journal and Courier: obituary of Lucy Downing on 3 Jan 1917 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, IN, USA. ³ Mrs. Lucy Downing, one of the oldest and best known women of Tippecanoe county, died at 5;25 o'clock this morning at the Home hospital of apoplexy. She came from her home in Battle Ground to spend Christmas with her sister-in-law, Mrs. John W. Graves. Yesterday morning Mrs. Downing was stricken with apoplexy and last night she was taken to the hospital. She never regained consciousness. She was born in this county about seventy years ago and all her life was spent in Tippecanoe county. She was the widow of Henry Downing and for many years the family lived on a farm near Battle Ground. Deceased was an earnest member of the United Brethren church of Battle Ground and was a woman of noble character. She was a kind neighbor and a true friend. She is survived by the following children: Harry and Guy Downing, of Battle Ground; Clay Downing, of Brookston: Mrs. Charles Smith, living near Battle Ground: Mrs. Nellie Beeker, of Medaryville, and Mrs. Sallie Carter, of Brook, Indiana. The body was taken to the family residence at Battle Ground to await interment.
