MINERVA: One of her biggest fans is the governor. Seventeen-year-old Melody Hasch does science and math so well that even he has noticed. Melody is a Minerva High School senior and has been selected as an Ohio representative in the U.S. Department of Energy's Summer Workshop in Albuquerque, N.M.
The daughter of Jerry and Lona Hasch, she was selected by Gov. George V. Voinovich and the Department of Energy. Until the past school year, Melody had never done a school science fair project. This spring, because of a requirement in her honors chemistry class, she came up with the idea of a solar-powered leaf blower.
Her project came in first at the district level and was first runner-up in the engineering division at the state level. Her big award for her project, though, came in her selection to attend the workshop in Albuquerque, scheduled for today through July 31. Melody will be working on solar cells and doing research at the Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque. Sandia, a major defense contractor, is one of the largest solar facilities in the United States. Being selected for the workshop was a nice surprise for her.
"My chemistry teacher, Connie Hubbard, got the application forms for me to apply for the program," she said. "One of the requirements was to send copies of the report on my project to Governor Voinovich. Since I was selected, the governor has asked me to write him or call him when I get back to tell him all about the workshop." In addition to her first flight in an airplane and attending workshops and seminars, Melody is looking forward to being a tourist. "We are scheduled to visit the White Sands Missile Base, spend a night in the Carlsbad Caverns and go to ball games and things like that," Melody said. It's amazing, though, that she can find time in her life to fly to New Mexico.
When she began working on her solar leaf blower, she also began volunteering every two months at the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, since the research center had donated the solar panels for her solar project. She was also involved, on a limited basis this spring, with the Stark Technical College solar car. This summer, she is working every afternoon at the Minerva Leader newspaper, writing society and general news while taking a morning class at school and, on the weekends, she works in the pro shop at Edgewater Golf Course in Minerva. She is just as busy during her school year. This fall, she will be editor in chief of the Minerva High School newspaper, the Pawprint, and was recently elected student body president.
She lettered two years in volleyball and basketball, plays the bassoon in the band and is a member of the National Honor Society. She ranks No. 1 out of a class of about 350 students, scoring 26 on her ACT test and 1360 on her College Board SAT. She will be taking college-level English and math classes at Mount Union College in the fall. One of the many honors she has recently won is the Yale University Science Engineering Award, which guarantees her automatic admission into Yale but offers no financial benefits.
She also received the Loral Defense Systems Innovations in Engineering Award. "I really haven't decided what I want to study in college. I am interested in solar energy and the environment, but I like to write, too. This summer workshop is a wonderful opportunity for me. I feel it will broaden my horizons and expose me to a diversity of knowledge.
There could be Nobel Prize winners there, and this will enable me to meet people. I am just really honored to be able to do this."
