Mrs. Leah Koch, widow of the late Jonas Koch, of Chillisquaque township, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John H. Cawley, near Pottsgrove, Thursday, of pneumonia. The deceased was one of Northumberland county's oldest residents. She was born August 23, 1814, and was therefore in the 85th year of her age. Her husband died 27 years ago next month. The deceased was a life-long member of the German Reformed church. She leaves three grown children -- Wm. H. Koch, Mrs. John H. Cawley and Mrs. Charles Rissell.

Obituary: Northumberland County Democrat on 2 Mar 1899 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. 1 Death of Mrs. Leah Bachman Koch Mrs. Leah Bachman Koch, relict of the late Jonas Koch, of East Chillisquaque township, Northumberland county, died of pneumonia Feb. 16, 1899. Mrs. Koch was born in Northampton county in 1814, Aug. 23rd, thus reaching the advanced age of 84 years, 5 months and 23 days. In 1834 she was united in marriage with Jonas Koch, who departed in 1872 thus surviving her husband in widowhood for 27 years, after having lived a married life of 38 years. She was the youngest daughter of John Frederick and Catherine Cole Bachman, who in company with their daughter and her husband removed from Northampton to Northumberland county in the vicinity of Pottsgrove in 1836, where they engaged in the pursuit of agriculture. Many years after the custom of women assisting in field work had been abandoned, it was her usual custom while living with her son, to visit the harvest field, bind a sheaf of nine ram and then say "well I have bound another sheaf 9 ram this season, I suppose this will be my last till I am gathered home." Mrs. Koch was a devoted Christian and while yet in her girlhood was indoctrinated in the faith and united with the German Reform church of which she was a faithful and consistent worshipper all her life. She was a great reader, and read her German Bible through and the New Testament a number of times. Many years ago she selected the words of her text to be used at her departure, viz.: "For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come." She was the mother of four children one having died in infancy, three survive her, two daughters and one son, Mrs. J. H. Cawley, Mrs. Chas. M. Rissel and Wm. H. Koch, grandmother to five J. R. Rissel, Florence J. Cawley, Jonas B., Wm. A. C. and Chas. Franklin Rissel, and great grandmother to George F. Rissel.

Book: Genealogical & Biographical Annals of Northumberland County, 1911. 3 Jonas Koch, father of Mrs. Cawley, was born in Northampton county Dec. 26, 1807, son of Adam Koch, who lived at Petersville, Northampton Co., Pa., where for many years he served as a justice of the peace. Adam Koch married Elizabeth Strauss, and their union was blessed with the following children: Christianna, Susan, Mary, Elizabeth, Reuben, William, Henry, Jacob and Jonas. In 1828 Jonas Koch moved from Northampton to Northumberland county, purchasing a farm in the eastern part of Chillisquaque township, where he spent the remainder of his life. He died Feb. 29, 1872, near Pottsgrove, Pa. He married Leah Bachman, who was born Aug. 23, 1814, in Northampton county, daughter of John Frederick and Catherine (Cole) Bachman, the former born Nov. 3, 1783, died Jan. 2, 1845; the latter, born Feb. 22, 1788, died July 16, 1852. Mrs. Leah (Bachman) Koch died Feb. 16, 1899, and she and her husband are buried in Harmony cemetery, at Milton, Northumberland county. They had a family of three children: Elizabeth married John Harrison Cawley; Mary A. married Charles Rissel; William H. is a resident of Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania.
