3. Obituary: The Virginian-Pilot on 19 Oct 1997 in Norfolk, Norfolk, VA. ⁵ Mr. Meijert Benschop, 88, of Westminster-Canterbury, died Oct. 17, 1997.
Mr. Benschop was a native of the Netherlands and received his degree in electrical engineering there. He was employed by Shell Oil Co. and worked in Indonesia and the West Indies for most of his career.
Mr. Benschop and his wife, Elisabeth, who died last year, became U.S. citizens in 1967. They lived in Virginia Beach since 1964 and were members of the Bayside Presbyterian Church since that time.
Survivors include his children, daughter Elisabeth J. Maxwell and her husband and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of Stamford, Conn.; his son, Hugo J. Benschop and wife of Scarsdale, N.Y.; son, Jan P. Benschop and his wife and three grandchildren of Garner, N.C.; and a host of friends here and in other parts of the world.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in Bayside Presbyterian Church by Dr. Richard Keever. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bayside Presbyterian Church or Westminster-Canterbury Fellowship Fund. Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, is handling arrangements.
