Charles William Horn Conducted Store for Fifty-Five Years
Charles William Horn, Slatington's oldest druggist and prominent resident, died on Sunday night at his home, 628 Main street, that place, from acute dilation of the heart. Mr. Horn, who successfully conducted a drug store in the slate borough for fifty-five years, was aged 78 years, 3 months and 16 days. Born and reared in Lehighton, a son of William and Mary, nee Leibenguth, Horn, he came to Slatington in the year 1870. A short time after locating there he opened his drug store in the same building on Main street to which he resided until his death. As the years rolled by his business prospered. He continued at the same stand until last fall, when he retired and sold the business to Walter Rex. During his long career as a merchant, Mr. Horn became widely known to the people of the borough and surrounding environs, among whom he was greatly loved and esteemed. He always took a spirited interest in the affairs of the community, although he was of a quiet and unassuming disposition and never aspired to political honors. He was a faithful member of St. John's Reformed church, and fraternally was affiliated with Star of North Commandery, 92, Knights of Malta. Besides his widow, Mary, nee Snyder, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Missley, of Manheim; a son, Robert W. P. Horn, of Allentown; three grandchildren and four sisters and a brother, Mrs. Effie Relchard, of Palisades Park, N. J.; Mrs. Hannah Riegel, of Sayre, N. Y.; Mrs. A. J. Smith, of White Haven; Mrs. Mary Hough, of Lehighton, and Silas J. Horn, of Minneapolis, Minn. The funeral will be held from his late home, 628 Main street, Slatington, on Thursday at 2 p. m. Services will be conducted at the house by Rev. M. F. Peters, pastor of St. John's Reformed church, and interment will be made In the Union cemetery, Slatington.
