Newspaper: Photo appeared in the Harrisburg Evening News, Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA. 6 A controversial photograph and text appeared in the Harrisburg Evening News, a clipped copy of which was found in a Bucher research folder on file at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania library in Philadelphia. The text is printed below and creates a create deal of mystery, for it is in great conflict with the genealogy of this Bucher family reported in William Henry Egle's Pennsylvania Genealogies. Here is the text, followed by a discussion of the conflicting information: 2. Residence: in 1830 in Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA. 7 8 Her marriage record states she was from Harrisburg. 3. Census in 1850. 4 John C. Bucher, occupation "gentleman", 57, was living with Ellen I., 53; Susan, 20; Ellen, 20; Eliza, 16; Henry Isett, 10; and Elizabeth Seip, 25. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. John's real estate was valued at $30,000, making him quite wealthy. Susan married Alexander Ray on 4 Jun 1867 in Washington, District of Columbia, DC.1 2 (Alexander Ray was born about 1802 in Washington, District of Columbia, DC 1 9, christened in Washington, District of Columbia, DC, died on 28 Jun 1878 in Washington, District of Columbia, DC 1 9 and was buried in Washington: Oak Hill Cemetery, District of Columbia, District of Columbia 9.) |
