1. Census in 1920 in Brighton Beach, Kings, NY. 3 Joseph Beacher, age 39, plumber, is married to his wife, whose name is difficult to read since the census taker crossed out one name and overwrote another. We believe it is Buser, age 31. Joseph was born in Russia and his year of immigration was 1882. Ruser was born in Philadelphia and her parents in Russia.

Living with them in 1920 are these children all born in New York: son Abe, 12; Milton, 6 years and 8 months; and Bernie, son, 4. The address appears to be 2822 W. 16th Street. The census was recorded on 6 Jan 1920.

2. Book: Alcatraz Island: Memoirs of a Rock Doc, 2001. 1
From a book review:
Milton Daniel Beacher was born in 1912 & graduated from George Washington University in 1936. Working for the U.S. Public Health Service, he was sent to Alcatraz Island as a medical officer. After a year, he returned to Brooklyn & established a family practice. Later he became a dermatologist & psychiatrist.
Dr. Beacher tried to get his memoir of that year on The Rock published in the 1950s but found no one interested. 30 years later he signed over his manuscript to his daughter, Dianne Beacher Perfit, who eventually groomed it & set up her own publishing company to get her father's remarkable & unique memoir out before the public.

From the author's website:

Milton Daniel Beacher, M.D. arrived on Alcatraz Island a naïve and compassionate young doctor. It was April 26, 1937. One year later, he left with a journal. It chronicled the suicides, discipline problems, force feedings, and details of a long strike and successful escape. He also penned conversations with famous prisoners like Al Capone, Alvin Karpis, and "Machine Gun" Kelly. Beacher later wove the journal into a vivid account of life on the Rock. Befriended by some prisoners, he included their first-person narratives and original prisoner poetry.
Milton Daniel Beacher was born in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in 1912. Soon after graduating from George Washington University, the U.S. Public Health Service sent the 25 year-old doctor to Alcatraz Island. He served as a medical officer for one year. Beacher later returned to Brooklyn and established a family medical practice. Some years later, he became certified in dermatology and psychiatry. In addition to being a gifted physician, Beacher was a talented artist, woodworker, and inventor. He painted, practiced psychiatry, and created fantastic things until his death in 1993.
