SAMUEL FAUST'S SUDDEN DEATH ON SUNDAY MORNING.
Passes Away Without a Word Before He Could be Carried to His Home - Apoplexy Supposed to be the Cause --
Henry Haas Dies at a Ripe Old Age
"In the midst of life we are in death." No truer sentence was ever recorded, and while a new year brings happiness to many hearthstones it also brings grief and sorrow. This community was inexpressibly shocked and startled on Sunday morning upon hearing the sad news that Mr. Samuel Faust had dropped dead on Arch street near his home. For some years Mr. Faust has made his home with his inlaw, Mr. John Bucher, on Arch street, near Fourth. Mr. Faust has been a resident of Sunbury for twenty five years, and has been engaged in the manufacture of hats, and has kept a hat and cap store that entire period. About a year ago he went to Philadelphia to have several prominent physicians examine him on account of his health, he having fears that he had heart trouble. The city doctors decided that his only trouble was a bad case of dyspepsia, and warned him in regard to his diet. On Sunday morning he ate a hearty breakfast and remarked that he felt very well. About nine o'clock he came down to his store on Third street, and was there a few minutes, when he left for the depot to secure the Sunday papers. When in front of the residence of M. L. Hendrick's, on Third street, he fell to the sidewalk, dropping over on his side. Several persons ran to his assistance and he regained his feet, saying that he was not injured in any way, and walked on to the depot. Here he had some conversation with Assistant Baggage Master Wm. Awl, and remarked that as he had falled on the first of the year he could expect a fall every day. Mr. Awl asked him if he was hurt, and to that he answered no, and said he believed he would not remain for the papers. Mr. Awl then said that he would walk down home with him, but he answered that it was not necessary and started off at his usual rapid gait. When in front of the residence of Mrs. Bruner he again fell, being in the same manner as he had previously, and again striking his head slightly on the sidewalk.
Several persons ran to his assistance, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Byerly, John Haas and Wm. Awl, but the hand of death was upon him and he never spoke. Mr. Haas says that as they tenderly lifted him up a look of recognization flashed from his eyes, but in a few moments he ceased to breathe. The doctors pronounce his disease apoplexy. The suddeness of the shock was a terrible blow to his relatives and his host of friends and a cloud of sadness was cast over the entire city. Samuel Faust moved from Reading to Sunbury in 1863 and has been identified with the business interests of the community ever since. He was a generous, kind hearted man who was respected and held in high regard by everybody. He had almost reached man's alloted time and in a few months more would have been three score years and ten. He was a consistent member of the Reformed church and was a very regular attendant. He had many friends and no enemies, and the grief over his loss will be widespread and universal. The funeral of the late Sam'l Fausts took place on Wednesday afternoon and was very largely attended. The services were conducted at the home of John Bucher, on Arch street by Rev. Calvin Leinbach assisted by Rev. Andrew Brydie. Mr. Faust had been a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Reading and the lodges of the order in this city turned out in respect of his memory.

Samuel married Margaretta Miller. (Margaretta Miller was born on 3 Apr 1821 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA,5 died on 9 Jun 1862 in Reading, Berks, PA 5 and was buried in Reading, Berks, PA 5.)
