1. Census in 1870 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. ¹ On the same Census page in 1870 we find three Bucher men as follows:

Visit 113 shows a Henry Bucher, age 24, "at home laborer", has a notation in column 18, "idiotic".
(That census column's heading is "Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic.") Henry also cannot read or write. He is listed next to Chas. Bucher, 22, laborer, who has no such notations. Both of them are living in the household of John G. Snyder, 38, RR Car Inspector, and his wife Catherine, 44, with their Snyder children: Mary E., 14; and Jacob, 10. Everyone is born in Pennsylvania.

Visit 115 shows a Henry Bucher, 16, apprentice to baking, living with David Fry, 28, bread and cake baker, and Louisa Fry, 54. Living with them are Mary K. Roads, 51, saleswoman; Mary Arnold, 19, domestic servant; and Lesslie Godleib, 30, baker. The latter was born in Germany, all others in Pennsylvania.
