  Noted events in his life were:

1. Census in 1870 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. ¹ The previous household also has a M. M. Bucher, age 7, "in the family" and living with James Beard, 57, justice of the peace, and his wife Susan, 56, and son J.A., 21, carpenter. All were born in Pennsylvania, except the elder James was born in Ohio.

Since James Beard is the father of Esther Beard born 1835 who married John Weiser Bucher born 1835, and John Weiser had a daughter Mary Margaret born 1862, M. M. age 7 is this Mary Margaret.

2. Obituary: Sunbury Weekly News on 23 May 1884 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. ² James Augustus Beard, recently buried here, was born at Milton where he lived with his parents, James and Susan Beard, until he reached the age of four, when they moved to Sunbury. In the year 1872, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Shipe. Their home was made happy by the birth of two little boys, Willie and James. The little family lived happily together until the end. In 1879, they moved to Nescopeck, Luzerne County.
He worked at the car works as a builder until last July, when he was employed to help build the large hotel near Wilkes-Barre, which is located on Mountain Summit and owned by a stock company. About five weeks ago, he was compelled to quit his work on account of failing health. Coming home to his family, he lingered until May 1, when he was called to that home from whence no traveler returns, dying at the age of 35 years, 5 months, and 28 days.
