Hayes Presidential Center, Fremont, Sandusky, OH. 1 The bulk of this collection is a handwritten memoir by Mrs. Dewey in 1896. It is 144 pages long and recounts her childhood and marriage to General Hazen. The memoir ends in mid-sentence while recounting incidents of the 1870s. Her memoir includes observations of other nationally-known nineteenth century figures including William T. Sherman, William Belknap, Kate Chase Sprague, Ulysses Grant, and James G. Blaine. 2. She has conflicting birth information of Abt 1847 and Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH. 2 3. Census in 1870 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH. 2 Washington McClean, editor, 51, is with wife Mary L., 42; daughter Mildred, 23; and John R., 20. All were born in Ohio except Mary L. in Kentucky. 4. Census in 1920 in Washington, District of Columbia, DC. 3 Living at 1609 K Street, Frederick H. Bugher, occupation "mining", 43, is living with Henrietta B., 45, and Frederick McLean, 18. The family refused to answer the questions about where they and their parents were born. Mildred married General William Babcok Hazen in 1871.1 (General William Babcok Hazen died in 1887 1.) Mildred next married Admiral George Dewey in 1899 in Washington, District of Columbia, DC.1 |
