a log barn, well shedd around; Wagon-shed and Corn-crib; a good spring of never-failing water; a good thriving Orchard of Apple, Peach and Cherry.

A LOT OF MOUNTAIN LAND,
situate in said township, adjoining lot of David Beecher, &c, containing 14 ACRES.
The above property will be sold separate or together, to suit purchasers.

3. Census in 1850 in Butler Twp., Adams, PA. 4 David Beecher, merchant, 56, was living with wife Mary, 53. Also with them was Archibald Wilson, clerk, 63; and Mary Weigle, 19. His real estate was worth $20,000 making him wealthy by comparison to others. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania.

His next neighbor is John Hoover, tanner, 37, living with Sophia, David Beecher's daughter, 28, and their children: Amelia, 9; daughter Georgeanna, 6; son Lisle, 4; and Mary, 1. Also in their home is Sarah Rufsell, 20, and Samuel Blythe, 7.

The next neighbor is David Beecher's son Samuel Beecher, laborer, 29; wife Matilda, 25; Calvin, 5; David, 3; Charles, 1 month old when the census was recorded on 13 Aug 1850. Also living with them: David Geyer, manufacturer, 23; and Sara Lower, 16. Samuel has no real estate value suggesting he is living on his father's land. Everyone in all families were born in Pennsylvania.

4. Census in 1860 in Butler Twp., Adams, PA. 13 The 1860 census recorded John Hoover, store keeper, 48, living with wife Sophia, 38; Georgianna, 17; Gilbert, 13; Mary C., 11; and Irene, 9. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. The post office was Arendtsville. John's real estate was valued at $8,000 and personal estate $6,000.

On the same census page is Sophia's father, David Beecher, 66, and wife Mary, 63, and also her brother Samuel Beecher, 40, and wife Sarah A. M.

5. Census in 1870 in Mechanicstown, Frederick, MD. 14 The 1870 census recorded John Hoover, iron master, 59, living with wife Sophia, 48; son Gilbert, works in iron forge, 21; and daughters Mary A., 18, and Irene, 16. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. John's real estate was valued at $6000 and personal estate $2000. The post office was Mechanicstown.

Next door is Nash Camp, works in iron forge, 32, with his family, and John Pogue, iron forger, 42.

6. Newspaper: Gettysburg Compiler, 9 Jan 1873, Gettysburg, Adams, PA. 15 The following items are from the last Mechanicstown (Md.) Clarion: The Iron Forge and house belonging to John Hoover situated on Hunting Creek, about a mile below Mechanicstown, was sold on Friday inst., by John C. Motter, Esq., Trustee, for the sum of $1,325. Purchaser, Mr. Wiestling, of Harrisburg, Pa. We understand the Forge will again be put in running order next spring.

John married Sophia Susanna Beecher, daughter of David Beecher and Anna Maria Gilbert, on 26 Aug 1840 in Beechersville, Adams, PA.1 2 (Sophia Susanna Beecher was born on 27 Sep 1822 in Arendtsville, Adams, PA,4 16 17 died on 18 Jun 1901 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA 16 and was buried in Seattle: Lake View Cemetery, King, WA 16.)
