Everyone was born in Maryland. Howard Sr. was born in Pennsylvania, his wife in Virginia, and the children in Maryland.

2. Census in 1860 in Ellicott Hills, Howard, MD. ² Howard Swain, lumber merchant, 49, was living with wife Charlott, 39; Lavinia, 18; Charlotte, 16; Harriet W., 14; Howard, 12; Mary E., 10; Elmyra, 8; Edward, 5; and William E., 2. Howard was born in Pennsylvania, his wife in Virginia, and the children in Maryland.

3. Obituary: Baltimore Sun: obituary of Charlotte H. Swain on 29 May 1867 in Baltimore, Baltimore, MD. ⁵ SWAIN -- On Monday, 27th instant, in the 47th year of her age, CHARLOTTE H., wife of Howard Swain and daughter of the late Major George W. Banks, of Virginia.
