2. Obituary: Daily Mail on 19 Nov 1897 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD. Dr. C. H. Gibson Dead. A Well Known Physician Succumbs to the Grim Reaper. He was aged 50 years. Death due to stomach trouble for which he was operated upon -- Mr. Warfield and Others. Dr. Charles Harrison Gibson, a well known and successful physician of this city, died at his residence, 57 West Franklin St., at 7:45 o'clock this morning of chronic stomach trouble, aged 51 years. Dr. Gibson had been critically ill for several months, his recovery having been despaired of for some days. He was confined to his bed for three weeks and gave up all hope of getting better. At his earnest solicitation as well as his family an exploratory laparotomy was performed on him on Thursday by Drs. Ragan, Wareham and Boyle as the last chance of possibly benefiting him or saving his life. The operation revealed an extensive malignant disease of the stomach and bowels of a fatal character. He is reported to have stood the operation well. Dr. Gibson was born near Gibson's Rock in Perry County, Pa, in 1846. He is a son of Robert Gibson, of Falling Springs, Pa., who is still living at the age of 86 years, and a relative of Chief Justice James Banister Gibson of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania of Carlisle. He pursued his academic studies at the Academy in Mechanicsburg and after attending the usual courses of lectures in the Miami Medical College graduated with the degree of M.D. in 1873. Dr. Gibson immediately afterward entered one of the hospitals in Cincinnati as resident physician for one year, and afterwards practiced in that city until 1875. The old Gibson home in which Chief Justice Gibson, Hon. John Bigler, Governor of California, and Hon. Wm. Bigler, Governor of Pennsylvania, relatives of Dr. Gibson were born, is still standing at Gibson's Rock and occupied by a brother of the deceased. Dr. Gibson came to Hagerstown from Mechanicsburg in 1880 and for 17 years successfully practiced his profession here. He was well known and highly esteemed and stood high in the medical fraternity of this city. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children, Vena Zelia, who is attending Irving College, and Roy, at home. He also leaves two brothers, George at Falling Springs, and Frank, a merchant in Harrisburg, and his two half brothers, James and Samuel Huston, of Mechanicsburg. Gen. George Gibson, commissary of the U.S. army, was a grand uncle of the deceased. Funeral services will be held at the home on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. George P. Wilson. The body will be taken to Mechanicsburg at 4:10 p.m. for interment.
