---
William H. Behringer, a former member of the firm of Hess Brothers and for many years a leader in the business and civic life of the communty, died suddenly at 6.20 o'clock last night in Elmira, N. Y., the result of a heart attack. He was 53 years old. (photo)
Mr. Behringer, whose business activities were centered in Rochester for the past three years, was stricken ill shortly before 6 o'clock as he was registering at an Elmira hotel. He was taken to the St. Joseph's hospital where he died a half hour later.
Active in merchandising in this city practically all of his life, Mr. Behringer made substantial contributions to the development of Allentown as the shopping center of the Lehigh Valley. His progressive merchandising ideas aided in building the solid foundation of Hess Brothers' department store.
He became associated with the late Charles and Max Hess when he entered their employ as a check boy when he was but 12 years old while the two brothers were arranging their stock to open their store in Allentown. The two merchants soon recognized his ability and he was soon advanced to more important positions, finally becoming a member of the firm. He was one of the first co-workers taken into the organization.
As a member of the firm Mr. Behringer continued his faithful work and aided in the merchandising work in the various departments of the store.
In 1930, upon his retirement from the firm, he organized Behringer's Inc., a department store that for several years was located in the B. and B. building at 6th and Hamilton Sts.
Three years ago he went to Rochester and for some time has been the representative of the Samette Underwear Co. of this city in its New York State territory.
Mr. Behringer was born in Allentown, the son of the late John Henry and Anna R., nee Nipsch, Behringer. He made his home in Allentown all of his life. Many years ago he was superintendent of the Sunday school of Zion Reformed church. He was a member of St. Johns Reformed congregation.
During his life in Allentown Mr. Behringer was prominently identified with fraternal organizations, among them the Elks, various Masonic bodies including the Lehigh Consistory, and the Four Square club.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Frances, nee Neiser, Behringer, president of the Junior auxiliary of the Allentown hospital; by a daughter, Gretchen, wife of Lieutenant Louis Hightower of Fort Sill, Oklahoma; a son, William H. Behringer Jr., of this city, and by three grandchildren, Gretchen, Anne Ellen and Louis Hightower Jr. Mrs. Hightower and her three children are spending the summer months at the Behringer home at 32 N. 8th St. He is also survived by a brother, Myron Behringer, and three sisters, Mrs. Edward Lichtenwalner, Mrs. Charles Laudenslager and Mrs. Spener Mackes, all of this city. Funeral arrangements were not completed last night.

William married Anna Frances Neisser, daughter of Edward A. Neisser and Ella Catherine Yochum, on 13 Oct 1908 in New York, New York, NY.1 (Anna Frances Neisser was born on 8 Dec 1884 in South Bethlehem, Northampton, PA 2 7 and died on 16 Jul 1970 in Allentown, Lehigh, PA 4.)
